Emilio J. Castilla is a Spanish organizational sociologist and management scholar whose research examines meritocracy, workplace inequality, social networks, and talent-management practices. He is the NTU Professor of Management and Professor of Work and Organization Studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he co-directs the Institute for Work and Employment Research. He previously taught at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 2024 he was named chair of the Organization and Management Theory division of the Academy of Management. Castilla is best known for his work on the limits of meritocracy, in particular for the finding that managers in organizations that openly present themselves as meritocratic may display greater demographic bias than managers in organizations that do not. His book The Meritocracy Paradox: Where Talent Management Strategies Go Wrong and How to Fix Them (Columbia University Press, 2025) won the 2026 George R. Terry Book Award for outstanding contributions to the advancement of management knowledge.
